EAOP is a state-wide college preparatory program sponsored by the University of California. For over 30 years, EAOP has helped students prepare for college by creating a community of young scholars and offering college-preparatory advising and academic enrichment opportunities. EAOP at UC Berkeley currently serves approximately 3,000 students from San Francisco, Contra Costa and Alameda counties.

The mission of EAOP at UC Berkeley is to prepare students from under-resourced communities for admission to colleges and universities. Students who are enrolled at an EAOP Partner School and maintain a 2.8 GPA or higher in their college preparatory coursework are eligible to apply to the program. Priority is given to students from low-income families and/or students who will be the first in their family to go to college. In general, students are invited to apply during the spring of their 9th grade year.

The Pre-College Academy (PCA) is a six-week college-preparatory summer program hosted by the Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) at the University of California, Berkeley.  For over 25 years, PCA has provided intensive academic enrichment for EAOP students from partner high schools in the Bay Area.  PCA prepares students for their academic and professional future by providing them with the opportunity to share in the University of California’s tradition of educational excellence and diversity. PCA prepares students for academic success in the following school year, including preparation for classes that meet the standards of the University of California’s and California State University’s A-G subject requirements.

PCA offers students rigorous coursework, college-style expectations and a chance to be part of a community of college-bound scholars. Students enrolled in PCA take two courses. All students are enrolled in a theme-based College Writing course and are also placed in a Math (Geometry, Advanced Algebra or Pre-Calculus) or Engineering course.Additionally, students attend weekly activity sessions that may include team building and leadership activities, college counseling, and field trips. All classes are offered on the UC Berkeley campus.

The Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) Summer Sessions offers enrollment and a special EAOP discussion section for highly prepared EAOP students during the summer between their junior and senior years.  EAOP and UC Berkeley Summer Sessions cover the cost of registration and course fees.  Students are responsible for the cost of transportation and books.  Financial support for public transportation and books will be available to students who qualify.

UC Berkeley Summer Sessions courses are extremely rigorous.  They are regular college courses taught by UC professors/lecturers and attended by UC undergraduates.  They are also fifteen-week classes compressed into six or eight weeks.  For this reason, participation is open only to current juniors who possess a minimum 3.5 weighted GPA in A-G coursework and have demonstrated maturity and leadership in their high school years.

The SAT Reasoning Test is an important component of the college admissions process. In spring semester of their junior year EAOP students are invited to enroll in the SAT Academy, a ten week course SAT preparation course.  During the SAT Academy students receive instruction in math, critical reading and writing, and test taking strategies.  They also take practice tests and learn about their test taking strengths and weaknesses by going through the results with the course instructors.
