About NIH Bridges to Baccalaureate Program

The goal of the program is to increase the number of African-American, Hispanic/ Latino, Native American, and Pacific Islander community college students who transfer to four-year universities in the biomedical sciences (not nursing or allied health), and graduate in these majors.

The program is offered only at Chabot College, Merritt College, Laney College, Berkeley City College, and College of Alameda.

Per the requirements of the funder, eligible students must be a member of one or more of the target ethnicities/races, US citizens or permanent residents, and have not already received a BA/BS degree.

Benefits include:

  • Tutoring and academic coaching
  • Individual transfer preparation/assistance
  • Exposure to top-level research labs
  • Opportunities to conduct full-time, paid summer research in a UC Berkeley professor's lab

Students who have participated in the program have transfered to UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Davis, and Stanford University, among others.
