Learning Target: Tips for high school juniors and almost seniors as they prepare to apply to 4 year colleges.
TIP #1: Take a rigorous course load senior year and pass all your classes!
One of the biggest misconceptions students have is thinking that senior year does not matter and that having an "easy" senior year will not impact their college admission results. To debunk this myth, it is important for seniors to understand the following:
-
The UC system makes admissions decisions through a holistic review of student academic performance as measured by multiple measures including planned (rigorous) 12th-grade courses and the number of college preparatory, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), honors and transferable college courses completed through senior year.
-
The CSU system sometimes considers fall grades to re-assess eligibility for students who are on the borderline (this practice varies by CSU campus).
-
Despite the level of rigor during the senior year, all colleges expect students to continue to achieve and pass all their courses. Private colleges and CSUs often ask for mid-year transcripts, so students need to pass all their courses (even at the mid-year point).
-
All colleges will require an end-of-year transcript. Colleges have the right to rescind (take back) admissions to students who fail senior-year courses.
TIP #2: Make sure you are on track to complete your A-G Requirements
-
You must complete at least 15 courses from the A-G approved course list.
-
A-G courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. “D” and “F” grades must be repeated.
-
For UC, 11 a-g courses must be completed before your senior year.
-
Math and Language other than English courses taken in 7th and 8th grades count towards a-g completion.
-
For Language other than English, you must take a minimum of two years in the same language.
