Summer 2022

CCTS & TAP Summer 2022

Summer Enrichment Program! CCTS & TAP had close to 25 students that took advantage of free summer session courses through extension.

Not only were they able to get a first-hand academic experience they were also provided with a 150-dollar book stipend!

Transfer Tuesdays! Continuing with the success of virtual programming, the Transfer Tuesdays team led by Aileen Parungaoprovided prospective transfer students with the opportunity to learn about UC Berkeley, financial aid, support services, and much more! These events happened every Tuesday in the month of June and were extremely well attended, hosting over 100 students per session!

NIH Bridges to Baccalaureate! This year was bittersweet for our NIH team as they embarked on the last summer of this program. Although the program was reduced to five students, these five participants were able to fully engage in research and lab experience with Berkeley professors.

EAOP Summer 2022

UC Berkeley’s EAOP summer programs returned in-person after two years of providing virtual summer academic programming.

EAOP's rising sophomores and juniors were able to take advantage of the six-week summer academic enrichment program, Pre-College Academy, where students took college writing and math courses for enrichment. With a more intimate number of PCA students, Instructors and Teaching Assistants were able to build and support students with academic gaps in math and writing.

Alongside EAOP's long-standing PCA program, EAOP also expanded their partnership with UC Berkeley’s Summer Sessions in two ways: expanded programming for 40 students which included residential experiences to earn college credits, and new partnerships with different Departments on campus to expand course offerings for another 40+ students.

In collaboration with UC Berkeley’s Summer Session PreCollege Program, EAOP were able to offer 40 selected juniors and seniors to take advantage of five academic opportunities, two of which were residential programs, including two special programs: Berkeley Changemaker and Computer Science Academy. In addition to collaboration with UC Berkeley’s Summer Session PreCollege Program, EAOP expanded it's collaboration with two new departments; Anthropology and Computer Science, where they were able to provide three new Summer Session courses to their rising seniors. This group of students was able to enroll in Anthropology 2AC: Introduction to Archaeology, Anthropology 112: Forensic Anthropology, and Computer Science 10: The Joys of Computing.

NAF Future Scholars at UCB Summer 2022

This summer, NAF Future Ready Scholars at UC Berkeley had the opportunity to host a hybrid program for our nearly 100 rising sophomores and juniors!

Scholars experienced a taste of college life by living and eating in the Unit 3 residential halls, climbing the hills to attend STEM lectures, and meeting the resident Berkeley squirrels. Following the residential program, scholars took part in 3 weeks of online STEM workshops focused on drones. After learning how to fly, code, and electrically engineer controller systems for their drones, scholars worked in teams to brainstorm a novel solution prototype to an identified social, medical, or environmental issue. Solutions ranged from a drone that can disinfect large areas of public spaces to lessen the spread of viruses like COVID-19, to quick and efficient organ transplant delivery, to battling deforestation with drones that can safely deposit seeds with less disruption to wildlife.

TRiO - ETS Summer 2022

This summer, the TRiO-ETS program was able to find the perfect balance between virtual and in-person summer programming.

TRiO-ETS had the opportunity to develop and execute new opportunities for students such as Summer Book Club while also hosting staple programs such as Boot Camp, WRITE ON! and middle school enrichment. This year's focus was on providing students with both college knowledge and new experiences like attending college tours and adventure park and rope courses in Sacramento and Santa Cruz. They were able to host a middle school day where they made homemade ice cream and students were able to create art using 3D doodle pens. The program filled the office with food, snacks, lots of amazon boxes and positive energy and discovered new skills on the Cricut.

It has been two years since being able to go on our Southern California College Tour, and we are so excited that we were able to do so this summer. Students were able to tour UCLA, USC, CSUN, Fresno State, UCR and Occidental College, while also enjoying cultural enrichment experiences such as the Museum of Tolerance and Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. With a total of 6 simultaneous summer programs, and serving over 200 students, the ETS team worked hard to ensure our students were constantly receiving the best resources and exposed to new opportunities.

A major highlight is the launch of our TRIO Ambassadors program, where TRIO participants applied and were accepted and trained to represent the program at their school sites and beyond.

DCAC Summer 2022

This summer, DCAC/EAOP College Adviser Fellows had the opportunity to work with graduating high school seniors through Summer College Transition (SCT) work led by Dr. Claudia Aguilar.

The SCT team provided regular communication to participants along with weekly transition webinars, 1:1 support, and a host of other resources to students who planned to enroll at various institutions of higher education. This work was important and made a huge impact on graduating seniors and their transition to college.

DCAC/EAOP also had 10 advisers support the UC Berkeley Office of Undergraduate Admissions (OUA) in the evaluation and finalization process for incoming first-year students. Work involved ensuring that admitted students who submitted their SIR, met all the conditions of admission. This is the third summer of this partnership with OUA, and we were very excited as this is a unique learning experience that contributes to the professional development of our advisers.

DCAC/EAOP College Advising Institute kicked off on August 1 into the school year, intensively prepping college adviser fellows to successfully serve their school sites!

EBSCC Summer 2022

With an exciting return to in-person programming, EBSCC hosted two summer programs: Summer Melt and the 32nd Pre-Collegiate Academy (PCA).

For Summer Melt, staff supported Oakland and Solano County graduated seniors with their matriculation process for post-high school plans via Zoom and in-person at Oakland High, John Finney HS in Vallejo, and Vacaville Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club (VBGC). EBSCC also provided services to the VBGC Teen Program with college requirements workshops, CTE programs highlights, mentoring, and financial aid and scholarships exploration.

As for PCA, over 100 students ranging from 7th-12th grade worked on their math development through a program theme of "flight", which culminated in a rocket launch presentation. In the afternoons, all grade levels participated in the college readiness workshops which included connecting with professionals in the Speed Networking event and embarking on weekly college tours to SJSU, CSUEB, SFSU, and UC Davis. The 4 week long program came to an end with an Open House celebration for families and a showcase of the students' and staff's talents.

The Puente Project Summer 2022

The Puente Project has been had a very full Summer of statewide faculty trainings and student programming!

In June, both secondary programs and community college programs hosted their annual Puente Summer Institute (PSI) where new Puente teachers and counselors come together for a week-long intensive where they are “Puentefied” and prepared for their new classes in the Fall. The community college PSI welcomed nearly 60 new faculty from campuses throughout California, and secondary programs welcomed participants from 20 campuses statewide!

Almost immediately following these conferences, Puente’s partnership with UC Riverside (re)launched the annual UCRP Conferences where Puentistas get the opportunity to experience dorm-life and navigating a UC campus, in preparation for their transfer. First up was the 5th annual Writer’s Conference which offers Puente scholars the chance to work with incredible BIPOC authors as they delve deeper into creative writing, poetry, and so much more.

Shortly thereafter was the inaugural UCRP STEM Academy! Formalizing a STEM strand in the traditional Puente curriculum has been a long time coming, and now it’s here! This STEM Academy brought math and science to life in ways that we’ve only dreamed of until now — learning fractions through Bad Bunny beats presented in class by a real DJ (who is also a math teacher!), how to land an internship at NASA, drawing inspiration from a space rover to engineer a way to keep a raw egg safe (and whole!) after a 3-story drop, and so much more!

TRiO - UB Summer 2022

Program started June 21 with a 3-day Student Leadership Conference to prepare students for the 6 week virtual summer program.

There were 60 students who chose to participate in the program representing the Classes of 2022-2025. Activities and workshops incorporated Health & Wellness, Mental Health, How to use Zoom, Google Suites, and accessing UC Scout. There were 2 Pathways: Academic and Career. Students in the Academic Pathway were able to take an On Demand Course through UC Scout in any Academic A-G Subject Areas. In the Career Pathway, students chose Health/Medicine, Law & Society or Coding/ STEAM. The Health/Medicine took a course on Introduction to EMT. While the Law & Society students learned more about Field and study of Law. Students in Coding/STEAM worked with Woven Learning to learn about Engineering, Coding, 3-D Printing, Drones, and Websites.

The summer program was filled with many activities: Weekly Community Circles, Mondays Academic Instructions, Office Hours, Tuesdays Discussions, Wednesdays Study Hall, and Thursdays College & Career Advising Courses. We also hosted: Fitness Workouts, Money Management with Youth Finance Institute of America, Cultural Cooking Nights, Health & Wellness Workshops Bay Area Creative Workshops, Hop to Health, Virtual College Tours.

On August 3, TRiO-UB hosted the End of Summer Showcase and Celebration recognizing students who completed the program. It was truly a great time to see the Career Research Projects that the Career Pathway students completed.
